Sincona sale 51, lot 3175

This specimen was lot 3175 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 575 CHF (about US$694 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Georg Ludwig (Georg I.), 1698-1727. 1/3 Taler 1720, Clausthal. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis I, 1698-1727, third thaler of 1720, Clausthal mint. Very rare, Good extremely fine, Nice toning.)"

This "leaping stallion" type was struck 1719-25. Other one-third thalers for 1720 include KM 110 (portrait/arms, 1720-HCB) and KM 111 (Wildman, 1720-C). Many other types of third thalers were issued before and after. One third thaler = half gulden.
