Künker sale 354, lot 5698

This specimen was lot 5698 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, - als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. Reichstaler 1720, Zellerfeld. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, min. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Bankrat Hans Schmidt, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 305, Frankfurt/Main 1982, Nr. 671. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, as George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, thaler of 1720, Zellerfeld mint. Attractive example with fine toning, minor planchet flaws, extremely fine.)"

This type, with the wild man on the reverse and the British arms on the obverse, was struck 1717-27. Another "wild man" thaler, with four shields on the obverse (Dav-2076) was also struck in this period along with leaping stallion thalers, St. Andrew thalers and bust thalers.
