Hannover 1720-C 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 73588 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1720-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (George I of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. Not listed in KM for this date. An attractive and early example of the type with dove-gray toning and scattered hints of charming champagne, cerulean, and russet color. Some localized weakness on the reverse noted for completeness. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Three different gulden are listed for 1720: KM 100 (1720-HCB, bust obverse, scarce), KM 112.1 (struck 1716-21, shown here) and KM 148 (1720-HCB, leaping stallion). This coin is catalogued as ⅔ thaler as no "24" is marked on the coin.
