Hannover 1714-HCB thaler Dav-2060
This specimen was lot 797 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. Reichstaler 1714, Clausthal. Prägung ohne den Königs-Titel. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, Clausthal mint, struck without the king's title. Proof example, handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
Leaping stallion thalers were issued from this locality as late as 1760. This type of 1713-15 is common. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
