France 1828-A 2 francs
This specimen was lot 1748 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €180 (about US$236 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AR 2 francs, 1828 A, Paris. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, silver two francs of 1828, Paris mint. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck during the reign of Charles X from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Paris and is a common date. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.
Recorded mintage: 234,624.
Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
