France 1828-K 2 francs
This specimen was lot 24564 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles X 2 Francs 1828-K, MS65 NGC, Bordeaux Mint, a choice and fully original example with rich cabinet patina. Rarely seen in this select grade. Better than the up-to-now finest known MS63, listed, and pictured, on the web site of CGB (the publisher of the catalogue LeFranc, in their Collection Ideale." This type was struck during the reign of Charles X of France (1824-30) from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Bordeauz and is a common date. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.
Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
