Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1694

This specimen was lot 1694 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €360 (about US$526 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AR 1 franc, 1828A, Paris. Fines stries d'ajustage et petites taches. Belle patine irisée. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, silver franc of 1828, Paris mint. Fine adjustment marks and minor nicks, rainbow toning, Extremely Fine.)"

A complete set of this type comprises 84 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1825-30, totaled about 5.3 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million.

Recorded mintage: 517,384[2], a common date.

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge, 23 mm diameter. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
