France 1827-W franc
This specimen was lot 1265 in Stephen Album sale 46 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE: Charles X, 1824-1830, AR franc, Lille, 1827-W, five leaves variety, an attractive toned mint state example! PCGS graded MS62." This issue, from the Lille mint, is a common date of a type struck 1825-30. All francs of Charles X are of this type with the exception of some very rare reeded edge specimens issued in 1830. It was demonetized in France in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 84 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1825-30, totaled about 5.3 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million. This date is priced the same as the commonest dates (1828A and 1828W).
Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
