JE160-1851r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1851 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$24,054 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AV 40 francs, 1827 A, Paris. Seulement 106 p. frappées. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, gold forty francs of 1827, Paris mint, only 106 pieces struck. Extremely rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1824-30 at two mints (Paris and Marseille) and the 1830-A is by far the most common date. This is a rare date, with Le Franc reporting only one known.

Recorded mintage: 100[2].

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.

Catalog reference: F.544/2, KM 721.1, Gad-1105; Fr-547.
