France 1826-W franc

Ponterio sale 182, lot 575

This issue, from the Lille mint, is a common date of a type struck 1825-30. All francs of Charles X are of this type with the exception of some very rare reeded edge specimens issued in 1830. It was demonetized in France in 1869. This specimen was lot 575 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description^[3] noted, "FRANCE. Franc, 1826-W. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Toned." A complete set of this type comprises 84 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1825-30, totaled about 5.3 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million. This date is priced as fairly common.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
