SB626-71226r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71226 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,159. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1810-MA. Marseille Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Spot Removed, EF Details. Fairly SCARCE and important, no matter its noted spot removal. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from A. H. Baldwin in London on 16 March 1968 for $6)." This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Marseille and is very scarce. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Recorded mintage: 8,807 (8,843 per the SCWC).

Specification: 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.255/20, KM-693.11; Gad-501.
