Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71350

This specimen was lot 71350 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1809-MA. Marseille Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. Lightly retoned a pleasing gunmetal gray and plumb hue, this minor offers a fairly charming strike for the type. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Lepczyk in March 1984 for $60). Ex: George Sobin Collection (Joseph Lepczyk - 3/1984) Lot # 1245 (part of)." This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. Many issues of this type (69 date-mintmark combinations are listed) are known from a handful (<10) of examples.

Recorded mintage: 26,722[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
