Heritage sale 3024, lot 23850

This specimen was lot 23850 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description^[2] noted, "Napoleon gold 40 Francs 1809-W, Lille, AU55 PCGS, lightly toned and attractive with underlying mint luster. Scarce date/mint with 5,925 struck." This type was struck 1809-13 with 2.1 million from all mints, making it the most common French forty francs. After the year 14, the revolutionary calendar was dropped in favor of the traditional Gregorian calendar. The forty francs of Napoleon are divided into six types, of which this is the last. It was demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate during World War One. A complete set of this type comprises twelve date and mintmark combinations.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
