Künker sale 386, lot 5423

This specimen was lot 5423 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €360 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich August I. 1806-1827. 2 Francs 1809, auf seinen Besuch in der Pariser Münze. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Sammlung Coenen. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 110, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 5527. (kingdom of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I, 1806-27, two francs of 1809, on his visit to the Paris mint. Outstanding example, superb patina, uncirculated.)"

This monnaie de visite was struck to commemorate the visit of the king of Saxony to the Paris mint. Specimens exist struck in gold (VG 2276) and bronze. Similar pieces were struck for the king of Württemberg when he visited December 27 (VG 2279/2280) and for the king of Bavaria when he arrived the next February (VG 2288/2289). These are actually medals, not coins, and it's likely officials weren't too concerned if they were over weight, as this one is.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 28 mm diameter, this specimen 11,23 g.
