Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71354

This specimen was lot 71354 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1810-H. La Rochelle Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VG-10. An example that clearly saw decades in commerce, this minor displays a fair degree of wear, but nevertheless remains entirely wholesome and the only representative of the type in the PCGS census. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Carol Plante on 8 December 1981 for $45)." This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from La Rochelle and is a rare date, like most of the 69 dates known for the type.

Recorded mintage: 5,686[2], a rare date.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
