Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 71252
SB626-71252r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71252 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $109. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 10 Centimes, 1810-T. Nantes Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-30. A deeply toned minor with even wear across both sides. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Lepczyk in 1981 for $270). Ex: Joseph Lepczyk (4/1981) Lot # 728." The specimen shown is one of a type struck 1807-10 during the regime of the Emperor Napoleon. This Nantes mint issue is a scarce date. Eight other mints struck this type. This type is the only billon issue of the decimal series. It failed for the same reason as the billon issues of Louis XV failed: rampant counterfeiting and rejection by the populace. The authors of Le Franc 10[2] note, "Ce type est sans contestation possible le plus falsifié de l'histoire monétaire moderne de la France (This type is without doubt the most counterfeited in the modern history of France)." They comment that one out of three examples seen are fakes but that they are collectible nonetheless. Only high grade specimens look like silver. Circulated examples show the dark greenish gray typical of base silver coins. Brassy examples are fakes.

Recorded mintage: 103,010 (103,034 per the SCWC).

Specification: 2 grams, 0.200 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.130/24, KM-676.8; Gad-190.
