Künker sale 336, lot 6048

This specimen was lot 6048 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,094 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Louis d'or au soleil 1709, D, Lyon. GOLD. Sehr schön +. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. louis d'or of the sunburst, 1709, Lyon mint. Very fine or better.)"

This type was struck 1709-15 in some numbers; the Lyon mint was second to Paris in emitting gold. It was the last louis of Louis XIV.

Recorded mintage: 431,131, a common date of a scarce type.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, this specimen 8.10 g.
