Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72010

This specimen was lot 72010 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1709-C. Caen Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS VF-35. A pleasing and wholesome, albeit circulated, example of the type. Seldom offered problem free and from a SCARCER mint, this crown issue should see spir[i]ted bidding." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) of France struck at the Lyon mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design. This date is fairly common.

Recorded mintage: 560,367[2].

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
