France SB818-20404r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20404 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Louis d'Or, 1709-A. Paris Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-61. A VERY RARE demi-louis d'or au soleil from a type struck 1709-15. Bright throughout, this example displays no highpoint wear with a touch striking softness in the centers where faint remnants from planchet adjustments are visible; a few wispy obverse marks contribute to the grade. This is the first offering of this date in Coin Archives since 2009 (Jean Elsen sale 102, lot 982)." This type is catalogued as a demi-louis d'or au soleil, struck at various mints 1709-15. Despite some substantial mintages, the type is rare, rarer than the preceding demi-louis d'or aux insignes of 1701-09.

Recorded mintage: 173,015[1], the highest mintage date but all are rare.

Specification: 4.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, 19-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 426, Dr/2 № 279, Fr-445; KM-388.1; Gad-243; Dupl-1450; Ciani-1812.
