Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74493

This specimen was lot 74493 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1709-S. Reims Mint. Louis XIV. NGC MS-61. Known as the Ecu of Three Crowns for the crowns that are found on the reverse. Some adjustments noted, yet fully Mint State with impressive brilliant luster." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) struck at the Reims mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also tenth, quarter and half écus struck during this period with this design. This date is slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: 1,482,011.

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
