Sincona sale 101, lot 2642

This specimen was lot 2642 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$302 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/4 Ecu aux trois couronnes 1709 N, Montpellier. Mit Münzmeisterzeichen Stern unter der Büste, für Jean Gillot (Direktor der Münzstätte Montpellier 1704 - 1720). Sehr seltener Jahrgang und Münzstätte. Sehr schön. Kein weiteres Vorkommen bekannt. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, quarter écu of the three crowns of 1709, Montpellier mint, privy mark: star. Very rare date and mintmark, Very Fine, No other specimens are known.)"

Altho quarter écus were never produced in France in large quantities, this type, issued 1709-15, is fairly available. It was originally valued at 22 sols tournois; after various manipulation, the value finally settled at 17½ sols tournois. There are also tenth, half and one écus struck during this period with this design.

Recorded mintage: 18,896.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine silver, 28-29 mm diameter, this specimen 7.51 g.
