This specimen was lot 20859 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIIII Ecu 1709D, MS64 NGC, Lyon, glacier white mint brilliance with well-struck features on a fresh flan, most attractive and decidedly rare in this superior grade." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) struck at the Nantes mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is last type of écu struck during the French Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also tenth, quarter and half écus struck during this period with this design. This product of the Lyon mint is slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: 216,042.

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
