Künker Auction 439, lot 2063

This specimen was lot 2063 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Louis d'or au soleil 1709 E, Tours. GOLD. R Kl. Probierspur am Rand, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half louis d'or of the sunburst of 1709, Tours mint. Rare, mount mark on the edge, about extremely fine.)"

This type is catalogued as a demi-louis d'or au soleil, struck at various mints 1709-15. Despite some substantial mintages, the type is rare, rarer than the preceding demi-louis d'or aux insignes of 1701-09.

Recorded mintage: 3,650, reported, not confirmed in Droulers[2].

Specification: 4.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, 19-21 mm diameter, designed by J. Röettiers, this specimen 4,17 g.
