Cuba 1988 10 pesos KM-163
This specimen was lot 3239 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 57 € (about US$74 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba. 1988. 10 pesos. Ernesto Che Guevara. 60º Aniversario de su nacimiento [60th anniversary of the birth of Che Guevara]. AG. Proof." Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. Che Guevara, of course, was a communist revolutionary whose deification was made easier by his early death. This type was struck 1987-89. It accompanied a gold gold pesos of the same design (KM 209). The line between "PESOS" and "CUBA" appears to be a scratch in the die, not the coin.
Recorded mintage: 4,000.
Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine silver, this specimen 31,06 g.
Catalog reference: KM 163.
