Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1163
Sed36-1163r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1163 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $12,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA, Havana mint, gold proof piefort 100 pesos, 1988, José Martí, NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (EMO Collection Label), "top pop." Full mirror fields, virtually perfect, from a reported mintage of just 10 pieces, of which six entries share the top spot with this coin in the NGC census. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was used again in 1989 and 1990. Other 100 pesos of 1988 included KM 202, KM 203 and KM 204 plus patterns and pieforts. This (KM P13) is a piefort version of KM 215, not to be confused with KM Pn13 (Leonor Molina).

Recorded mintage: 50 plus 15 proofs plus an unknown number of pieforts, perhaps 10.

Specification: KM 215: 31.103 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW; KM P13: 2 troy oz.

Catalog reference: KM 215; Fr-20 (regular weight), KM P13 (double weight).
