Colombia 1873-M 5 decimos
This type was issued 1872-73 at Medellin under the new decimal system of 100 centavos = one peso. The denomination is written as 'CINCO DECIMOS'. This date is also known with a different style liberty head (KM 153.4, see second specimen) but that type is considerably scarcer. The second specimen was lot 42021 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1873-M 5 Decimos. Medellín mint. AU-50 (PCGS). Obverse with smaller head, after Barre. Attractive silver gray with some luster and spare toning highlights of gold and bright blue. Some light hairlines are noted. This type produces a far better central strike than previous designs of this denomination. While Restrepo terms this issue only 'scarce,' Burnett knew of only one example of the 1873-M 5 Decimos with the Barre head. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins."
Recorded mintage: 90,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 0.335 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: first specimen: KM 153.3; second specimen KM 153.4, Restrepo 297.1.
