Colombia 1873-P 5 decimos
The specimen shown was lot 1122 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $310.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, Colombia, 5 decimos, 1873/69, ex-Dana Roberts collection, rare. 12.1 grams. Toned Fine with old scratches in field behind head, small rim-cut, crude and lacking contrast but a highly sought issue (no values given in KM). Pedigreed to the Dana Roberts collection." While Colombian half dollars are common as a class, even in uncirculated, this is not a common date. Popayán struck five décimos 1869-74 in very limited numbers and the survivors are usually in wretched condition.
Recorded mintage: 7,743.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .335 troy oz ASW, edge lettered DIOS LEY LIBERTAD, this specimen 12.1 grams.
