Colombia 1870-P 5 decimos
This specimen was lot 42010 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1870-P 5 Decimos. Popayán mint. VF-25 (PCGS). Unusually nice for an early Popayán 5 Decimos, with some residual luster around the peripheries offering more information about the grade than the typically softly struck centers. The final date digit is profoundly recut, with three distinct 0s seen with the naked eye. The obverse shows subtle granularity, while the reverse is more smooth and lustrous, with a fairly well defined shield. A very nice example of this scarce issue. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Freeman Craig, December 1986." This is the most common date of this type struck at Popayán 1869-71, 1873-74, 1878, 1880. Five décimos were also struck at Medellin and Bogotá.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 0.335 troy oz ASW.
