This specimen was lot 24391 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20 Pesos 1870 Popayán, MS63 NGC, a nice lustrous example with sharp features for this provincial mint. Very scarce type in this quality." This type was struck at Bogotá (1862-77), Medellin (1867-72) and Popayán (1863-78). All are scarce and many dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.26 g, 0.900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW (same standard as the French hundred francs d'or).
