Sedwick sale 12, lot 1388

This specimen was lot 1388 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogotá, Colombia, 50 centavos, 1873, encapsulated NGC MS 61. Choice strike and grade (very rare for this type), with super luster underlying a nice toning all over, very sharply detailed." This type was issued 1872-73 under the new decimal system of 100 centavos = 1 peso. The denomination is written as '50 CENTAVOS'. The later, more common type of 1874-85 used a slightly different bust and spelled the denomination as "CINCUENTA CENTAVOS."

Recorded mintage: 101,000 for 1873-74.

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 0.335 troy oz ASW.
