Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1613 thaler Dav-6298
This specimen was lot 5426 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Heinrich Julius, 1589-1613. Reichstaler 1613, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 20. Juli. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Patina, vor[z]üglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion LHS Numismatik 100, Zürich 2007, Nr. 769. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Henry Julius, 1589-1613, thaler of 1613, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on July 20. Scarce in this quality, fine patina, extremely fine.)"
The duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel issued dozens of different thalers in the seventeenth century, many featuring the mythical "wild man" of the forest. This thaler commemorates the death of the duke. It was accompanied by an eighth thaler (KM 41), quarter thaler (KM 42), half thaler (KM 44) and double thaler (KM 48/Dav-6297).
