Künker sale 354, lot 5427

This specimen was lot 5427 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €440 (about US$612 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Heinrich Julius, 1589-1613. 1/4 Reichstaler 1613, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 20. Juli. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 77, Osnabrück 2002, Nr. 1851. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Henry Julius, 1589-1613, quarter thaler of 1613, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on July 20. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel issued dozens of different thalers in the seventeenth century, many featuring the mythical "wild man" of the forest. This quarter thaler commemorates the death of the duke. It was accompanied by an eighth thaler (KM 41), half thaler (KM 44), single thaler (KM 46/Dav-6298) and double thaler (KM 48/Dav-6297).
