This type was struck 1613-28 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Duke Friedrich Ulrich ruled 1613-34. This specimen was lot 34693 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $529. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Taler, 1614. NGC AU-55. Friedrich Ulrich (1613-34). Toned." This type was struck 1613-15 and lacks the "D:G:" found on the regular Dav-6303.
