This specimen was lot 21116 in Heritage sale 3004 (New York, January 2009), where it sold for $1,035. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Heinrich Julius Taler 1608, MS63 NGC, lovely golden patina in the legends, Wildman type, typical small flan flaws on the obverse which are natural stretch marks in the metal from the minting process. From the Grundy Collection." This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Heinrich Oeckeler who also worked at the Goslar mint. This type is recorded for both mints. It was issued 1601-13 and is common. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
