Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1588 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 25037 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/2 "Spectacles" Taler, 1588. Goslar Mint; mm: patriarchal cross. Julius. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details. A fairly RARE minor denomination, this so-called "spectacles" issue clearly saw a good deal of use in commerce, exhibiting some even handling throughout as well as some cleaning as noted. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This half "spectacles" thaler was struck 1588-89 and is rare. The "brillenthaler" nickname comes from what appears to be spectacles (brillen) below the skull in the wild man's hand.
