Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1587 1-1/2 thaler Dav-LS18
This specimen was lot 4105 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €6,750 (about US$9,286 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Julius, 1568-1589. 1 1/2facher Reichstaler 1587, Wolfenbüttel. Eineinhalbfacher Brillentaler. Von größter Seltenheit. Feine Patina, leichte Prägeschwäche, leichte Bearbeitungsspuren am Rand, sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung Dr. Friedrich-Karl Günther. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Julius, 1568-89, 1½ thaler of 1587, Wolfenbüttel mint. Extremely rare, fine patina, slightly weakly struck, light tooling on the edge, very fine.)
Diese Münze ist von Duve unter den Dicktalern eingeordnet worden. Die gebogene Buchstabenfolge auf der Rückseite läßt sich zu dem folgenden Satz auflösen: "Was Hilft Dem Auge Licht und Brille Der Sich Selbst Nicht Hört und Kieken Will". Die horizontal über dem Pferd stehenden Buchstaben bedeuten "In Medio Cursu Metuo" (mitten im Lauf habe ich Bedenken). Zusammen mit der Legende "SI DEVS PRONOBIS QVIS CONTRANOS" (warum gegen uns, wenn Gott für uns ist) spiegeln sie die persönliche Einstellung des Herrschers. (Duve has classified this coin among the 'Dicktaler'. The curved sequence of letters on the reverse resolves into the following sentence: "Of what use to the eye are light and spectacles, if one does not heed oneself and yet insists on looking?" The letters positioned horizontally above the horse signify "In Medio Cursu Metuo" (in the midst of the journey, I have misgivings). Together with the legend "SI DEVS PRONOBIS QVIS CONTRANOS" (who is against us, if God is for us), these elements reflect the personal outlook of the ruler.)"
This rare type was struck 1587 only along with a double thaler (KM MB214/Dav-LS17).
