Künker sale 386, lot 5016

This specimen was lot 5016 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Julius, 1568-1589. Reichstaler 1588, Wolfenbüttel. Brillentaler. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, sehr schön. Exemplar der Münzsammlung aus altem Adelsbesitz, Teil 7, Auktion Hess/Leu 50, Luzern 1971, Nr. 59. Von den 3 verschiedenen Typen der sogenannten "Brillentaler", die Welter unter den Numern 579 bis 581 aufführt, ist der hier vorliegende Typus mit Abstand der seltenste. Er unterscheidet sich im wesentlichen von dem häufig vorkommenden III. Type durch die veränderte Rückseitenumschrift. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Julius, 1568-89, "spectacles" thaler of 1588, Wolfenbuttel mint. Extremely rare, fine patina, very fine. Of the three different types of the so-called "spectacles" thaler listed by Welter under the numbers 579 to 581, this is by far the rarest. It differs essentially from the frequently occurring third type in the changed inscription on the reverse.)"

This type, struck 1587-88, is one of three well-known "spectacles" thalers of Julius. The others are Dav-9065 and Dav-9067. The "brillenthaler" nickname comes from what appears to be spectacles (brillen) below the skull in the wild man's hand. The design was also used on half thalers.
