This specimen was lot 4104 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$16,509 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Julius, 1568-1589. Doppelter Reichstaler 1587, Wolfenbüttel. Münzmeister Dietrich Oeckeler. Doppelter Brillentaler. Geharnischtes Hüftbild halbl. mit Streitaxt in der Rechten, darunter im Abschnitt fünf Zeilen Schrift, daneben Helm, r. dreifach behelmtes, sechsfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild//Wilder Mann mit Baumstamm in der Rechten steht halbl., in der Linken Licht mit Totenkopf, Stundenglas und Brille, vor ihm das zurückblickende Roß l. Von größter Seltenheit. 4. bekanntes Exemplar. Attraktives Exemplar, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 100, Osnabrück 2005, Nr. 693 und der Sammlung Friedrich Popken, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 375, Osnabrück 2022, Nr. 2152. Obverse: Armored half-length bust holding a battle-axe in the right hand; below, in the exergue, five lines of text; to the side, a helmet; to the right, a triple-crested, sixfold coat of arms with an escutcheon; reverse: A wild man, holding a tree trunk in his right hand, stands half-length; in his left hand, he holds a candle accompanied by a skull, an hourglass, and spectacles; before him, a horse looks back to the left. Of the utmost rarity. The 4th known specimen, an attractive example; very fine.)
Diese Münze ist von Duve unter den Dicktalern eingeordnet worden. Die gebogene Buchstabenfolge auf der Rückseite läßt sich zu dem folgenden Satz auflösen: "Was Hilft Dem Auge Licht und Brille Der Sich Selbst Nicht Hört und Kieken Will". Die horizontal über dem Pferd stehenden Buchstaben bedeuten "In Medio Cursu Metuo" (mitten im Lauf habe ich Bedenken). Zusammen mit der Legende "SI DEVS PRONOBIS QVIS CONTRANOS" (warum gegen uns, wenn Gott für uns ist) spiegeln sie die persönliche Einstellung des Herrschers. (Duve has classified this coin among the 'Dicktaler'. The curved sequence of letters on the reverse resolves into the following sentence: "Of what use to the eye are light and spectacles, if one does not heed oneself and yet insists on looking?" The letters positioned horizontally above the horse signify "In Medio Cursu Metuo" (in the midst of the journey, I have misgivings). Together with the legend "SI DEVS PRONOBIS QVIS CONTRANOS" (who is against us, if God is for us), these elements reflect the personal outlook of the ruler.)"
This rare type was struck 1587 only along with a 1½ thaler (KM MB212/Dav-LS18).
