Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1587 thaler Dav-9064
This specimen was lot 73191 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. "Light" Taler, 1587. Goslar Mint. Julius. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, EF Details. Retaining a bit more detail than would otherwise be expected for the overall grading level, this pleasingly toned example presents its noted graffiti in the form of some marks below the date on either side of the wildman. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This "light" thaler (referring to the lamp in the wild man's hand and not the weight) is noted for 1583-88. It is fairly common for a sixteenth century thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
