Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73205

This specimen was lot 73205 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/2 Taler, 1594. Goslar Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. A SCARCER, earlier type, this wildman minor presents a high degree of detail remaining, with some cleaning as noted, but an alluring re-tone beginning to take hold. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This "spectacles" half thaler was struck 1594-99 and is somewhat available tho rare in choice condition. Thalers and quarter thalers with this design also appeared in the 1590's.
