Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73641

This specimen was lot 73641 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/2 Taler, 1597. Goslar Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS EF-40. This coin exhibits dove gray surfaces with toning of dark gold and dark cobalt leaning to sable in the protected areas of the peripheries. Slight softness is seen in the strike. A toned-over, small staple scratch on obverse is noted for completeness. An attractive and rather early example of the Wild Man motif. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This half thaler was struck 1594-99 and is fairly common.
