Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1697 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 41334 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 24 Mariengroschen, 1697. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Ernst August. PCGS MS-61. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1693-98, was worth two-thirds thaler or one gulden. It is fairly common in circulated condition but expensive choice. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
