Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1696 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 25065 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 24 Mariengroschen, 1696. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August, as Bishop of Osnabrück. PCGS MS-62. Very well struck and wholly enchanting, this dazzling minor, with quality that is undoubtedly RARELY encountered, presents a good deal of glistening luster paired with an attractive cabinet tone composed of steely gray and burnt sienna. Meanwhile, the level of detail within the face of the wildman is quite stunning and yields immense charm despite the smaller planchet offered by the denomination. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1693-98, was worth two-thirds thaler or one gulden. It is fairly common in circulated condition but expensive choice. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
