Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70694
SB1021-70694r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70694 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg. 2/3 Thaler, 1695-HB. Georg Ludwig. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Unc Details. A sharply struck and lightly worn coin, with even gray toning throughout. The noted tooling refers to some light scratches in the obverse periphery at 3 to 4 o'clock, that are barely visible without magnification. From the Richard Goodheart Collection." The auctioneers have incorrectly attributed this gulden to Georg Ludwig (later George I of England) but the coin states "ERN:AUG:", i.e., Ernest August, duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenburg 1679-95 and elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenburg-Hannover 1695-98. This issue of 1693-98 is almost identical to KM 379, struck 1693-94 before he became elector.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-397; KM-A17.
