Künker sale 386, lot 5177

This specimen was lot 5177 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €300 (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. 2/3 Taler 1699, Clausthal. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 211, Osnabrück 2012, Nr. 3005. (electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, bishop of Osnabrück since 1662, two-thirds thaler of 1699, Clausthal mint. Extremely fine.)"

Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short). This type was struck 1698-1705 and is fairly common. The blank escutcheon on the obverse arms indicates George's ambition of acquiring the crown of Great Britain, which was attained in 1714 on the death of queen Anne.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 13.07 g. the weight of 4/9 thaler.

Catalog reference: KM 17, [[Silver crowns by Davenport number|Dav-418]; Welter 2153.
