Künker sale 386, lot 5178

This specimen was lot 5178 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €180 (about US$233 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. 2/3 Taler 1699, Clausthal. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 211, Osnabrück 2012, Nr. 3005. (electorate of Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, two-thirds thaler of 1699, Clausthal mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type, with the wild man on the reverse, was struck 1698-1711 and is somewhat scarce. Other gulden for 1699 include KM 17 (leaping stallion reverse) and KM 14 (wild man on obverse). Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
