Hannover 1701-HB 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 5677 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €120 (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. 2/3 Taler 1701, Clausthal. Fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Bankrat Hans Schmidt, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 305, Frankfurt/Main 1982, Nr. 646. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, two-thirds thaler of 1701, Clausthal mint. About uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1698-1705 while George was merely elector of Hannover. In 1714, he succeeded to the throne of Britain. Others of this denomination had wild man reverses, "St. Andrew" reverses or bust obverses.
