Hannover 1701-HB thaler Dav-2061
This specimen was lot 1202 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Georg Ludwig (Georg I.), 1698-1727 Taler 1701. Clausthal. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1727, thaler of 1701, Clausthal mint, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was issued 1700-05 (confusingly, the 1700 issue is catalogued as Dav-6655). St. Andrew thalers were issued from this locality as late as 1760. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.07 g.
