Künker sale 354, lot 5678

This specimen was lot 5678 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €420 (about US$585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. 1/3 Taler 1702, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Erworben 1975 von der Firma Greiser. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, one third thaler of 1702, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1702 only while George was merely elector of Hannover. In 1714, he succeeded to the throne of Britain. Others of this denomination had wild man reverses, "leaping stallion" reverses or bust obverses.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
