This specimen was lot 1873 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hanover. 12 Mariengroschen, 1702-HB. NGC graded About Uncirculated Detail (Surface Hairlines)." This type was struck 1702-05 while George was merely elector of Hannover. Another twelve mariengroschen struck in 1702 (KM 34) features the "wild man" on the reverse. In 1714, he succeeded to the throne of Britain. Twelve mariengroschen = one third of a thaler.
